Live-bearing aquarium fish, often simply called livebearers since the fish retain the eggs inside their body and give birth to live, free-swimming young. Live-bearing fish species are found in several fish families. A lot of the most commonly kept aquarium species belong to the family Poecilidae.
This large family contains popular species such as the Guppy, Swordtail, Platy, and Molly. The Poecilidae family of fish are amazingly colourful making these fish even more attractive for the family aquarium. These fish are generally easy to keep and are highly recommended for the beginner aquarist.
